Power Station 5, Block 4
ESB International is the Engineering, Construction and Management (ECM) consultant for the implementation phase of Power Station 5, Block 4, a 680MW extension for Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba). This phase commenced in March 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by Q4 2024. ESB International also provided the same services for Blocks 1-3 of Power Station 5, completed between 2015 and 2020.
A safety leader in the industry, Alba, one of the world's largest smelters with over 50 years of operation, prioritizes continuous improvement. This commitment is reflected in their outstanding safety record – achieving over 30 million safe working hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI) in September 2022.
Collaborative Approach
Alba has three captive power plants located on-site to power the smelter operations, and 2022 was a record year for smelter production output. ESB International has been working with Alba since 2015 to develop Power Station 5, delivering 2480MW of new capacity to assist Alba in meeting its efficiency and emissions targets.
The Gas Turbine (GT) for Block 4 is the Mitsubishi M701JAC, one of the largest GTs available today. This is the first application in a smelter installation worldwide and the largest single-generation unit in Bahrain. As one of the most advanced and efficient GTs currently available, this will significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
Commitment to low-carbon future
The first ignition of the Alba PS5 Block 4 GT occurred on 23rd April 2024. The unit is one of the world's most efficient power generation units and will help Alba significantly reduce its CO2 emissions. Decommissioning a much older and far less efficient unit will reduce emissions by 0.5 tones per 1 tons of aluminum output. The successful first ignition of this Gas Turbine occurred only 6 months after the GT unit's delivery on site in October 2023. ESB International is currently providing site supervision services on the project.
ESB International continually supports clients in providing solutions to minimize the carbon footprint of power generation. Utilising the most advanced technology available reduces CO2 emissions and aligns with our commitment to achieving a low-carbon future.
